Summary of this tutorial:
The first way to check would be to login to the admin area of your WordPress site.
On the dashboard page, scroll down to the bottom and in the bottom right you will find ‘Thanks for creating with WordPress’ with the version number next to it.
In some cases you may not be able to see the version information in your admin area.
Assuming you do not have admin access you could look for the generator tag in the source code.
visit the website in a browser window and right click on any empty area on the screen and select View Page Source from the browser menu.
This will show the source code in the browser window and you will be able to press CTRL+F and search for ‘generator’ and in that tag there should be a content with your version number.
The third method would be to go to the readme file for the site.
Each installation of WordPress adds a readme.html file in the root folder. Unless the site’s owner has disabled access to this file you should be able to view the readme by adding readme.html at the end of the site’s URL.On this readme you will be able to view the site’s version.
If your site is on WordPress.com then you will not need to know the version number.
