Our first recommendation is MemberPress. It is one of the largest and most robust membership solution at the moment, it also sets up many of the required pages for a membership site for you to make the process very straight forward. There are even options for content dripping, different access controls, integrations with popular email services, and even multiple types of gateways. You can find the plugin and apply any discounts we may have negotiated using our affiliate/referral link below:
Second would be LearnDash, it's a very flexible LMS plugin. This allows you to easily create classes, lessons, or other learning resources for your users. Pre-built in are the options to create quizes, add badges, course specific forums, and other education related needs. You can find LearnDash and apply any discounts we have negotiated using our referral/affilaite link below:
Teachable is another powerful option available for a membership plugin. There is the negative that this is not a WordPress plugin and it is instead its own builder. It is a powerful course builder that you can place on a subdomain for your site and have pre-built tools to help you get up and running. You can find Teachable and apply any discounts we have negotiated using our referral/affilaite link below:
Restrict Content Pro is another contender for a great membership plugin to consider. This is built by the same people behind plugins like Easy Digital Downloads so you know it's a good company behind it and has many different payment integrations. You can find Restrict Content Pro and apply any discounts we have negotiated using our referral/affilaite link below:
S2Member is the final recommendation we have in our list. The main issue is that for beginners it can be quite difficult to properly set up. Other than that it is a powerful option for an alternative. You can find S2Member and apply any discounts we have negotiated using our referral/affilaite link below:

If you have not updated your WordPress site or you have the Classic Editor plugin are the most common reasons.
